Jack Roben, M.M., Jazz Guitar

Raised in the rich jazz scene of Seattle, Washington, Jack was taught the foundations of the music by his father, Andy, who is a pianist/organist in the area. He attended EdmondsWoodway High School, where he was mentored by Jake Bergevin and studied privately with Daniel Sales. His accolades from his time in Seattle include membership in the 2013 NAFME AllNorthwest Jazz Band and participating the 2013 Essentially Ellington competition in New York City.

Jack then moved to Denton, Texas to study at the prestigious University of North Texas, where he received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies (2017). During his time at UNT, Jack was a member of many ensembles including the Grammy nominated One O’Clock Lab Band. As a member of the One O’Clock he performed at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival, performed with Stefon Harris, and is featured on the album Lab 2017. While in living in Texas, he performed and recorded with notable DFW musicians such as Ed Soph, Chris Milyo, Matt Young, Clay Pritchard, Mike Luzecky, and Peter Rioux among others.

Jack continued his studies at the University of Northern Colorado, where he received a Master of Music (2020) and was a Graduate Teaching Assistant. It was here where Jack found his passion for jazz education and also came into his own as a performer. As a member of UNC Lab I, Jack participated in the Jack Rudin Jazz Championship at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, where he received the Outstanding Guitar award.

As an active guitarist in the Denver area, he performed and recorded with musicians such as Jim White, Ben Markley, Dana Landry, Drew Zaremba, Brian Claxton, Daryl Gott, and Tom Amend.

Jack was a lecturer of jazz guitar at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville from 2020-2023. In Knoxville, Jack performed with Eric Reed, Joel Frahm, Gregory Tardy, Jon Hamar, and the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra.
