Scales

A scale can be defined as “a graduated series of musical tones ascending or descending in order of pitch according to a specified scheme of their intervals.” (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/scale)

The word scale comes from Latin scala, meaning a stair, staircase, or ladder. Scales are therefore made up of steps – either whole or half steps in specific combinations depending on the type of scale.
